Spinster Emporium
My search for vintage fabrics is a never-ending adventure. Apart from the general rummage through thrift stores, car boot sales or antique fairs, vintage fabric calls me from any direction. A couple of weeks ago, I helped out with my local community and had to visit pensioners, mainly for cups of tea and what not. But it dawned on me when I was visiting a charming lady called Eva, that old ladies stash lots of vintage and retro fabrics! So much so that their curtains are still the same curtains that probably saw the day their children were born. So while Eva was pouring tea, I started to eye up her vintage fabric curtains and rugs. Lets just say, it wasn’t just the tea that was hot.
When I went home, I looked back upon on of my favourite sites – Spinster’s Emporium. The only emporium that you’ll find all your vintage haberdashery, timeless 1930’s buttons and vintage wallpaper and so on. For me, the biggest part of the site is seeing the beautiful, mouth watering vintage fabric. Each time I pop in, there’s something new to eye goggle me. While I was getting my dose of vintage delights, I came across Wildwood, a definite delight – but this delight was different to the rest, this one became quite familiar. Good old Eva has very similar vintage curtains hanging in her living room! Who knew a spinster would meet a spinster through retro fabric! I won’t be buying Eva any of Wildwood, Vintage Fabric, as she already has something quite similar, but to ensure that my Sunday visit will be special I will be purchasing a metre of Buttercup Fields, this is a precious vintage fabric that’ll work wonderfully for a new dress. With a lovely 1950’s floral pattern it’ll suit Eva’s blonde hair for sure.
Spinster’s has been part of my life for the past few months, and each pay day I purchase more off the emporium. Last month I treated myself by doing a bit of dressmaking with Mary Mary vintage fabric. It has such an intricate print, and spring feeling that I just couldn’t resist. “How does your garden grow? A lovely autumn feeling floral vintage fabric, that also has a country girl feel. Charming vintage fabric with delicate ditzy floral arrangement, very liberty style.”
Who could resist with a descriptions like that! All the products on the Spinster’s Emporium website have quirky titles and descriptions like this. Even if you aren’t about to buy anything this time, just have a quick look around for the lovely descriptions. But anyway, with my purchase of Mary Mary, Vintage Fabric, I made myself a springtime pair of shorts. It’s a simple pair as my dressmaking skills are not as well as I would like them yet, but I have many things in mind. Maybe I could make an apron, or a top, or I could make a small cushions. The possibilities are endless. But what I do know is that Spinster’s Emporium also holds a collection called “Haberdasher Me” which helps sewers such as myself to think outside the box, and customise their own clothes using vintage fabrics, beads, vintage buttons and trimmings. This may be what I take with me to Eva’s, there’s just too many goodies to grab. But this is definitely a lot easier than searching the markets for lovelies, Spinster’s Emporium holds the haven for all things delicious.
